This year, the first energy conference of the year coincides with a very special anniversary for us: We look back on 50 years of successful partnership with Egypt. In February 1974, Wintershall Dea signed a contract for its first concession in Egypt, at the time trading under the name DEMINEX. From our first steps producing oil in the Gulf of Suez to our focus on natural gas today. Since 50 years, we’re delivering secure energy supplies that Egypt needs.

Our Contribution to the MENA Region

The MENA region is central to global energy supply and an important part of Wintershall Dea’s business. It has a well-established gas supply system and all the ingredients to be a leader in the energy transition. As of 1 February, activities in Algeria, Egypt, Libya and the United Arab Emirates have been led under a joint business unit for the MENA region. Our long-standing activities in the region are characterized by trust, partnership and cooperation. We see the new MENA BU as the right setup and path into the future, towards new technologies and opportunities.

We have been a partner to Egypt for 50 years. Today our focus is on natural gas. The West Nile Delta project, for example, is one of the largest projects where our company is involved. It consists of five gas fields with 25 producing wells. Recently, we celebrated first gas in the East Damanhur block, which we were awarded in 2019. While the country is a natural gas powerhouse today, it has the potential to grow in low-carbon energy solutions in the future. Egypt is well-positioned to serve as an energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Algeria is the leading natural gas producer in Africa and the third largest exporter to Europe. The country has significant untapped natural gas reserves, and great potential for low-carbon hydrogen, solar and wind power, as well as for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Recently, we have signed with Sonatrach an agreement for a Scientific and Technical Cooperation. We will initiate a joint, long-term program to exchange knowledge and experience about topics associated with our core business and in the field of low-carbon energies.

Our story in the MENA region started in Libya. We have been active in crude oil exploration and production in the country since 1958. Since 2011, activities have been affected by the difficult political situation in the country. As a responsible partner, we continue to support energy production in a politically challenging environment. We are monitoring the situation very closely and hope that the stabilisation process is continuing.

With some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) form a globally important centre for energy supply. Our activities there started in 2010. Since 2018, we have been working closely on the Ghasha mega-project. Whether it comes to drilling technology, demanding wells, safely producing sour gas, or knowing what matters in ecologically sensitive areas: We bring technical expertise to the UAE.
