Fraudsters are currently using fake identities to trick women in particular into paying money via social networks. Dating profiles are created using photos copied from the internet and constructed CVs. Once contact has been made, love affairs are faked and after a while money is demanded.

One variant is that of the fictitious lover who allegedly works on the Mittelplate drilling and production island operated by Wintershall Dea, where he is held against his will. Money is requested either for financial compensation for an alleged mistake or for the unscheduled passage ashore.

Some of the women concerned contact Wintershall Dea to ask for confirmation of their identity as their employee. However, Wintershall Dea does not provide any information about its employees for data protection reasons. Furthermore, Wintershall Dea does not detain people against their will on the Mittelplate drilling and production island, nor does it demand payments for "unscheduled" crossings.

If fraud is suspected, we recommend contacting the police immediately.
