Who we are

The TSC in Barnstorf is Wintershall Dea’s competence center for Reservoir Services and Production Services. We provide a multifaceted portfolio of complex laboratory and fit-for-purpose solutions which support the assessment of reservoirs and the optimisation of operations, recovery, and storage. Our subject-matter experts are also involved in technology scouting and ideation, contributing to the development of new technology.

The technical equipment of the new laboratory is unique in the German-speaking world. A total of 10 million euros was invested into a modern laboratory building equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Furthermore, we have established connections to analytical partner labs for specialised measurements.

Modern analysis and consulting

The TSC in Barnstorf supports Wintershall Dea’s domestic and international business locations with analytical investigations and consulting services in the fields of geosciences, petrophysics, production chemistry and materials & corrosion. The specialists know Wintershall Dea’s business very well and offer a portfolio of modern analyses and tailor-made solutions. In the oil and water archive, numerous samples from oil productions and from borehole tests are kept for later investigations.

Over

70,000

metres of drill cores are stored in the drill core warehouse in Barnstorf.

Production Services

Our Drilling Fluids & Cement Lab provides the basis for cost-effective selection of appropriate third-party products, root cause analysis of drilling problems as well as quality control of formulations and procedures.

A multitude of chemistry-related aspects specific to the production of gas and oil are being addressed by our Gas & Oil Field Services.

Our Materials & Corrosion Lab is equipped with a variety of characterisation and testing methods. References from material and corrosion science as well as synergies with chemistry ensure cost-effective and customised solutions.

Reservoir Services

We offer a broad range of consulting and analytical services from nano to basin scale.

Our Reservoir Specialists Group are subject-matter experts in micropaleontology, mineralogy and reservoir quality prediction.

The Advanced Core Analysis & Digital Rocks Lab provides petrophysical measurements, characterizes reservoir rock-fluid interactions, conducts core flooding experiments, and offers pore-scale analyses and simulations.

Our aim is to provide tailor-made solutions for reservoir characterisation challenges. We work together with selected contractors to achieve this.

Virtual Rocks in 3D

Wintershall Dea further expanded its Service & Technology Center in Barnstorf. At its heart is a microcomputed tomography scanner that can be used to create high-precision 3D images of rock samples from natural gas and oil reservoirs or from CO2 and hydrogen storage sites. This process is called Digital Rocks. Hundreds of rock samples are examined each year.

The core warehouses

The expanded core warehouses in Barnstorf and Wietze store drill cores from all over the world – from the North German Basin to the Norwegian Barents Sea. Currently, it is about 70,000 core metres. The oldest rock sample dates back to 1911. The samples are the company’s “memory” and can even be re-evaluated decades later.

Services for the energy transition

The existing reservoir characterisation and laboratory services are used to support Wintershall Dea’s ambition to grow its carbon management and hydrogen business. For example, the Digital Rocks analysis is used to simulate CO2 injection into potential CCS targets. The TSC is continuously seeking to increase the skills of its energy transition capabilities and is keen to collaborate also with external operators.

With the Technology & Service Center, Wintershall Dea leverages services, technology and innovation across our global portfolio, based on the actual needs of the asset teams.
